Benzyl alcohol at 0.9% inhibits bacterial growth, permitting multi-dose access to a reconstituted vial.
Lyophilised peptides arrive as dry powder and have to be reconstituted before use. Bacteriostatic water is sterile water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol, a preservative that inhibits bacterial growth — which is what makes it safe to enter the same vial repeatedly over days or weeks. Plain sterile water is single-use only.
