Why collagen production falls, and what signals it back

The biology behind the change you can see in the mirror, and why topical collagen cannot fix it.

The decline is real and it is measurable

Collagen production falls roughly one per cent per year from the mid-twenties, and considerably faster through perimenopause as oestrogen — which supports fibroblast activity — declines. Elastin, which governs whether skin returns to shape, is worse: your body essentially stops producing meaningful amounts of it in adulthood.

This is why the changes people notice in their forties are structural rather than superficial. It is not dryness. It is less scaffolding.

Why topical collagen does not work

Collagen molecules are far too large to cross the stratum corneum. A cream containing collagen leaves it on the surface, where it functions as a perfectly decent moisturiser and nothing more. It is not that the ingredient is fake — it is that the delivery is impossible.

The alternative is not to supply collagen but to signal for it. That is what copper peptides such as GHK-Cu do: they act on fibroblasts, the cells that manufacture collagen and elastin, prompting them to produce more.

What a realistic timeline looks like

New collagen has to physically be synthesised, which takes time. Texture and hydration changes appear in the first month. Firmness — the change that requires new structural protein to exist — is a six to ten week story at minimum.

Firmness needs new structural protein to physically exist, so anything visible inside two weeks is water retention rather than collagen.
